Painting # 287 - Dr. Betty Bastien (2016) states, “To understand the present we must understand the past” (p. 9). Thus, my learning journey begins with the creation of this painting honouring the original occupants of Treaty 7 territory. My reference photo was taken at Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park where Treaty 7 was signed in 1877. Simultaneously, I’ve been reading, listening and watching to learn more about land acknowledgements, colonialism and the ongoing legal and socioeconomic impacts of treaties on Indigenous communities. Understanding our shared history is a positive step to renewing relationships between Indigenous peoples and other Canadians. Knowing the truth can foster respect and a desire to move forward together to encourage strong families, healthy communities and vibrant cultures, all which contribute to a stronger Canada for everyone.

Paining #279 - The CBE Indigenous Education Team gathered electronically to create this visual of what Indigenous Well-Being looks like to each of us. I depicted four traditional medicines: rosehips, prairie sage, sweetgrass and wolf willow. The visual of the roots, sprout and full bloom of each plant reminds us of the cycle of life. Each seed must be nurtured to reach full maturity and share its gifts. A sweetgrass braid is wrapped around to symbolize protection.

Our team is sharing this with schools, students, families and the greater community and invite you to do the same. It will also serve as a foundational touchstone for our renewed CBE Indigenous Education Strategy.

Painting #264 - My artwork is inspired by the song Loess, by The Fragments. Loess immediately resonated with me. Its melody inspires a sense mystery as do the lyrics, which personify soil. Through this project, I learned that a loess is formed by the accumulation of wind-blown silt, and its soils are among the most fertile in the world.

After repeatedly listening to the song, I was motivated by the story about the earth’s land. I’ve never considered the life of soil and how it constantly moves, settles, accumulates, and takes shape. It’s like there’s a secret world that lives within our landscapes. I felt the melody reiterated this idea and that’s what I wanted to capture in my painting.

I chose blue tones to depict a mysterious mood and used mostly an analogous colour scheme of yellow, green and blue. I loosely blocked in the sky, land and trees. In the foreground, I painted bands of colour in different widths to represent layers of soil. This is also where I would capture the movement of the music and the land. From this stage, the painting took on a life all of its own. I aspired to let the song feed my art and to remain open, receptive and responsive to the moment. A constant challenge was ensuring my piece looked unified. I knew I was finished when the feeling of my painting fit the tone of the song.

I use a layering process. I've always glazed but this is much different .... its that "subtracting the light" thing!

I would call myself an intuitive painter so this is very different for me. I admire David Langevin's work and I read his blog about his process. I did some reading about painters block and the following statement got me to pick up my brush, "You always have something in your head, just paint it". I let go of trying to figure out what to paint, found a photo for inspiration, and just painted. It is what it is!
